Biocore’s mission is to provide the highest level of engineering and analytics expertise to clients dedicated to the understanding and reduction of injury. We've been dedicated to this mission since the inception of our company in 2002.

  1. 2002 - 2007

    Biocore is formed by Jeff Crandall and Richard Kent as an extension of their work out of University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics. Initial focus is centered around automotive safety, consulting and research.

  2. 2008

    • Biocore begins working with professional football in the United States on Lower Extremity (LEX) research.
    • Development of the BEAST device begins.
  3. 2009

    BEAST development is complete, and outdoor testing of NFL playing surfaces begins.

  4. 2013

    • Biocore hires it's first full-time employee
    • First NFL athlete study to understand cleat loads.
  5. 2015

    • First helmet poster ranking helmets based on laboratory testing, replicating on-field impacts.
    • Equipment testing capabilities are expanded to include:

      • Helmet Impact Testing
      • In-Lab Turf Testing
      • Footwear Performance and Safety
      • Thigh-pad Impact Testing

    • First prohibition of helmet models based on the correlation between laboratory testing and on-field concussion rates.
    • NFL game concussions are reduced by 25% through rule changes and helmet improvements

    • Update of helmet testing methodology and publication of position-specific concussion trends.
    • Mobile BEAST for scalable testing development starts.
    • Data pipelines and digital twin record creation begin for the Digital Athlete program.
    • First cleat designed for NFL testing.

    • The Performance Lab is launched.
    • Biocore begins 3D Body Scanning for on-field replication of player performance and actions.
    • Development of an improved surface impact testing workflow with lab accuracy begins.
    • First mobile stadium BEAST prototype.
    • Helmet Challenge submissions achieve 13% improvement over the current top-performing football helmet.
    • The first position-specific helmets are introduced.
    • The Digital Athlete NFL Headquarters application development begins.

    • STRIKE impact testing concept created.
    • First NFL league-wide tracking of footwear via RFID chips.
    • Digital Athlete Teams application development begins, Lower Extremity (LEX) risk modeling pilot with 4 NFL teams.
    • Development of BEAST Software begins.
    • Guardian Cap NXT mandated for offensive and defensive lines in NFL practices drives a nearly 50% reduction in preseason practice concussions for those positions.

    • BEAST pilot testing during the NFL season for synthetic, natural grass, and hybrid surfaces.
    • STRIKE player-informed development and testing of all NFL stadium fields.
    • Helmet of the Future begins.
    • In partnership with EXOS, Biocore performs the first motion capture study done with professional American football players.
    • NBA Performance Software and API developed.
  15. 2025 Latest

    • BEAST testing becomes mandatory for NFL game field testing. 15 BEAST devices are delivered to NFL stadiums using synthetic turf.
    • STRIKE testing becomes mandatory for NFL game and practice field testing; devices deployed to all NFL club stadiums and practice facilities.
    • NBA Motion Software developed
    • Biocore is acquired by Exos
