Location: Charlottesville, VA
Industry: Engineering Consulting

Employment Type

  • Full-time, exempt employee
  • In person at offices in Charlottesville, VA
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Roles and Responsibilities

Our team fuses data streams from athlete-worn sensors, computer vision output of game and practice video, human-conducted game tagging/rating systems (e.g. PFF.com), lab tests of safety equipment, and various SQL/NoSQL databases to maintain a comprehensive picture of athlete health, safety, and performance. Working with internal stakeholders, you will design, develop, and manage data pipelines, databases, and APIs that support research teams, analytic dashboards, and software applications. These products drive improved equipment, rule changes, policies, and protocols that improve health and safety outcomes for athletes in supported professional sports leagues and amateur conferences. Your work will span multiple sports and industries. Example problems you might address include:

  • Developing data pipelines, databases, and dashboards to support computer vision workloads that process game video to automatically detect and log helmet impacts in American football
  • Developing an API to support the delivery of daily load statistics (total distance, high speed acceleration events, etc.) derived from performance tracking sensors worn by athletes in practice
  • Developing ETL pipelines to consolidate data from disparate sources including SQL databases, REST and GraphQL APIs, and Excel spreadsheets into a data warehouse
  • Designing a database to store the results of thousands of laboratory tests of sports safety equipment such as helmets, cleats, and shoulder pads.

Position Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. in a STEM discipline requiring computational programming: computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, data science, statistics, physics, applied math, etc.
  • Prior experience building out a modern data platform to support small-to-medium sized businesses with data catalogs, observability, and data quality monitoring
  • Exceptional proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Experience working with AWS, specifically technologies like Lambda, Step Functions, Glue, and Athena
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and managing databases and APIs to support analytics, machine learning, and research workflows
  • Experience in MLOps and integrating machine learning workloads with databases desired
  • Experience working with professional or collegiate sports leagues or teams (NFL, NBA, MLB, Premier League) desired

Working style/character qualities

  • You are passionate about data quality.
  • You are a great teammate who enjoys working with others to build things together that you could not build alone.
  • You are comfortable working on small team with a high degree of autonomy over the data platform

Compensation

Competitive salary with comprehensive benefits package (includes medical, dental, vision, and stipends for health and wellness), opportunity for ownership through stock options, and a performance-based bonus program.

This position is available for immediate start. If interested, please submit a cover letter and resume to [email protected]. Reference posting FY24-03 in your correspondence.
