Dr. Baek is a mechanical engineer and a data scientist who studies artificial intelligence/data-driven methodologies for solving complex design and engineering problems. He has more than 10 years of research experience in digital human modeling with a number of high-impact publications including one that is listed in the “Top 25 Most Cited Articles in Computer-Aided Design Since 2011.” Dr. Baek earned his PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Seoul National University in 2013 with his award-winning study on statistical shape analysis and was a Presidential Postdoc Fellow of Korea until he moved to the United States in 2015 to join the University of Iowa as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. He is currently an Associate Professor of Data Science and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia and the Director of the Visual Intelligence Laboratory. He also serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Computational Design and Engineering.
